Winona Senior High Wrestling
The Winona Wrestling program will be making some exciting changes. Brad Berzinski and Matt Drazkowski have decided to promote Joe Hoialmen to co- head coach. The decision to bring Hoialmen on as co-head coach is the result of his exceptional commitment to the entire Winona wrestling program and his excellent skills as a coach. This arrangement is meant to give the Winona wrestling program a boost. Both Joe and Matt and the entire coaching staff are determined to take the program to the next level. Our goal is to take Winona as team to the state tournament in the near future, and to build a program that everyone is proud of, from top to bottom. In order to accomplish this, things will need to continuously improve. In addition to changes in the high school practice room, improvements will also include an integrated k-12 wrestling program, improved home wrestling events, a bigger and more advanced wrestling room at the high school, new mats, better equipment, and therefore, improved fundraising and promotion for the sport of wrestling in Winona. Our goal is this will help bring everyone together to achieve one common goal. There is no better coach in the state of Minnesota than Coach Hoialmen. As a wrestler in High School he was a 3x state place winner and a state champion. While attending college at Augsburg he was a NCAA national champion and a 3 X NCAA All American. He then went on to coach at Augsburg for 6 years and the team won 4 NCAA team titles. After that Joe headed to coach for Apple Valley, in the 10 years he was there they won 9 State tournament titles. Along the way Joe has coached many state champions including 5x winner Destin McCaulley 3x winner Matt Kellihler and 2x winner Eric Devos. This addition will help bring Winona wrestling back among the elite Minnesota programs.
